Behavioral Consultant Services

A Small Miracle, Inc. is now providing Behavioral Consultation (BC) with selected practitioners we have contracted with.  This new service will allow service recipients in the CAP program to receive up to 100 hours of behavioral consultation per plan year at no cost to the family!

Behavioral Consultant services will provide assessment and treatment of the service recipient and support, training, and consultation to staff, family members, and primary caregivers who support the service recipient who exhibits extremely challenging behaviors.  These behaviors are frequently complicated by medical or mental health factors.

The behavioral techniques and interventions are designed to decrease challenging behaviors while increasing positive alternative behaviors, assisting participants in acquiring and maintaining the skills necessary to live independently in their communities and avoid institutional placement.  Behavioral Consultant services may include assessing behavior; designing a behavior intervention plan; monitoring the plan; and training staff, family members, or primary caregivers on the implementation of the plan.

There are two levels of Behavioral Consultation: Behavioral Consultant II and Behavioral Consultant III.  Level III provides a higher level of expertise and experience with regard to severe aggression, self-injury, and other dangerous behaviors.  Your case manager can help you determine which level is needed for your loved one.

Individuals who provide Behavioral Consultation for our agency meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a licensed psychologist (required for level III), licensed psychological associate, or licensed social worker in the state of North Carolina.
  • Be a Board-certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or have at least 2 years of supervised experience in conducting functional behavior assessments as well as the development and monitoring of behavior intervention plans.
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of experience providing behavioral assessments, consultation, and treatment to persons who have intellectual and developmental disabilities, and who exhibit severe challenging behaviors.
